De Miller, owner of Lazarus Filmworks out of Mount Dora, was getting ready to finish filming on "Grace of the Father" with a cast that includes Darren Dowler, lead vocalist of Paul Revere & the Raiders, and Suzanna Leigh, the love interest of Elvis Presley in "Paradise, Hawaiian Style." when De contracted a staph infection and spinal meningitis. This illness left him paralyzed on December 6, 2014. He has had an expensive and long term recovery period which requires prolonged and extensive therapy in order for him to walk again. De has been in nursing home and multiple hospitals in the past year. The family has incurred extraordinary expenses. Sue, his wife, works full time but can not keep up with the medical costs
In June 2015, against formidable odds, the new Lazarus filmworks movie, “Grace of the Father,” was completed in Lake County. Amazingly, De was was able to help direct the movie from the hospital via a set-up of Sony Facetime. ADs Rosy Pizzaro and Cindy Long and PA Linda Briscoe set up the system and kept it running. I was aided ably on the set by several co-directors, the movie star (and movie producer and director in his own right) Darren Dowler: his wife, Sue Miller, and executive producer, Phyllis Chapman.
